Portfolio News: GSBC acquires Cudd Bentley

GSBC surpasses 200 specialists with landmark addition of Cudd Bentley

Global Sustainable Buildings Consultancy (GSBC) has reached a major milestone in its growth strategy with the addition of Cudd Bentley, taking the Group to more than 200 engineers, sustainability specialists and technical professionals across the UK.

The addition of Cudd Bentley represents GSBC’s largest acquisition to date and marks a significant step in its ambition to build one of the UK’s leading sustainable buildings consultancies. The Group now brings together five highly respected specialist businesses, combining deep technical expertise with a shared commitment to collaboration, innovation and delivering sustainable outcomes for the built environment.

Established in 1978, Cudd Bentley has built an outstanding reputation for delivering building services engineering and sustainability consultancy across the education, healthcare, heritage, commercial, residential and public sectors. Its long-standing client relationships, highly experienced team and employee-owned culture have made it one of the UK’s most respected independent engineering consultancies.

The addition further strengthens GSBC’s capability in complex engineering, retrofit and decarbonisation, while significantly increasing the Group’s geographic reach, technical capacity and ability to support major programmes across the UK.

With Cudd Bentley joining the Group, GSBC now comprises QODA, ESD, TGA, VZDV and Cudd Bentley, creating a national platform of complementary specialist consultancies able to support clients throughout every stage of the building lifecycle.

Collectively, the Group now offers expertise across:

  • Building services engineering
  • Sustainability and Net Zero strategy
  • Building performance and operational energy
  • Passivhaus design and certification
  • Heritage and conservation engineering
  • Decarbonisation and retrofit
  • Digital engineering and building analytics
  • Strategic technical advisory services

Stephen Hawkins, Chief Corporate Development Officer of GSBC, said:

“Welcoming Cudd Bentley into the Group is a defining moment for GSBC. Reaching more than 200 specialists isn’t simply a milestone in our growth; it reflects the strength, depth and resilience we are building to support our clients for the long term.”

“From the beginning, our ambition has been to bring together outstanding consultancies that are recognised for technical excellence, trusted client relationships and a commitment to creating better buildings. Cudd Bentley is exactly that type of business. Their reputation, culture and expertise make them an exceptional addition to the Group.”

“As the challenges facing the built environment become increasingly complex, clients need trusted partners with the breadth of expertise, capacity and resilience to deliver integrated solutions. By bringing together leading specialist consultancies while preserving the identity and culture that make each business successful, we’re creating a consultancy group that is genuinely greater than the sum of its parts.”

Cudd Bentley will continue to operate under its established brand, retaining its leadership team, culture and client relationships while benefiting from the investment, resources and collaborative opportunities available across the wider GSBC Group.

For clients, it is very much business as usual. Existing project teams and day-to-day contacts will remain unchanged, while clients gain access to a broader network of specialists across engineering, sustainability, building performance and strategic technical advisory services.

The partnership also creates new opportunities for employees through greater collaboration across businesses, enhanced career development, knowledge sharing and access to a wider range of projects, sectors and specialist expertise.

Steve Bainbridge, Managing Director of Cudd Bentley, said:

“As a business with a strong employee-owned heritage, finding the right long-term home for Cudd Bentley was one of the most important decisions we could make for our people and our clients.”

“GSBC shares our values, our commitment to technical excellence and our belief in investing in people. What impressed us most was their determination to preserve the culture, independence and client focus that have made Cudd Bentley successful for so many years.”

“Joining the Group allows us to build on everything we’ve achieved while creating exciting new opportunities for our clients, our employees and the future growth of the business.”

The addition of Cudd Bentley represents another significant step in GSBC’s long-term strategy to create a market-leading group of specialist consultancies focused exclusively on sustainable buildings.

As governments, developers, institutions and asset owners continue to accelerate investment in decarbonisation, building performance and resilient infrastructure, GSBC is uniquely positioned to combine the agility, personal service and specialist expertise of independent consultancies with the strength, investment and collaborative capability of a national consultancy group.

With more than 200 specialists working across five complementary businesses, GSBC continues to invest in the people, expertise and innovation needed to help shape the future of the built environment.
