Ecology Group welcomes specialist river and floodplain consultancy, Dynamic Rivers
Global Ecology and Environmental Group (Ecology Group) has announced today the acquisition of Dynamic Rivers, a consultancy with specialist knowledge across river and floodplain restoration, geomorphology, naturalisation, Natural Flood Management, hydrology, hydraulics, and fluvial dynamics. Founded in 2021, the business has built a reputation for providing quality services while bringing modern and simplified working practices to every project they deliver.
Headed up by Managing Director, Dr. George Heritage, and Director, Seb Bentley, Dynamic Rivers is trusted by clients across government agencies from the Environment Agency to Natural England, the National Trust, wildlife and river trusts including West Cumbria Rivers Trust and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, and local authorities such as Gloucestershire County Council. Since its inception, the business has delivered lasting impact to clients and nature alike, with notable projects including:
River Breamish, Linhope (Tweed Forum): Working with Tweed Forum, Dynamic Rivers reconnected the floodplain at the River Breamish, Linhope. The project focused on “wetting” palaeochannels (reactivating ancient, historic river paths) to turn them into natural subsurface storage pathways. By reconnecting these buried channels, the floodplain now absorbs and holds back excess water, slowing the flow to reduce peak flood risk downstream.
Kirkstone Beck, Cumbria (National Trust): At Kirkstone Beck, Dynamic Rivers delivered a bespoke restoration solution within a constrained valley corridor, carefully balancing landowner needs with environmental goals. By selectively breaching lower channel embankments, widening the channel, and creating key stream features, the project gave the river room to naturally recover. Rejuvenating the lower valley fan encouraged out-of-bank flow and the formation of embryonic gravel splays, resulting in a dynamic, multi-channel anastomosing network that restores natural river processes and enhances biodiversity across the Brothers Water SSSI.
Scarrow Beck, River Bure (North Norfolk): Restoring Scarrow Beck, a vital chalk stream in North Norfolk’s River Bure catchment, Dynamic Rivers lowered the floodplain to create new wetlands, ponds, and woodland habitats. The team also installed gravel and cobble riffles along the riverbed, restoring natural flow dynamics and critical habitats for native aquatic biodiversity.
The business prides itself on enabling clients to understand rivers and their associated landscapes. This is critical in supporting sustainable river basin management, flood risk mitigation, and river restoration. Dynamic Rivers also brings a team of six specialists in applying hydromorphology and geomorphology to solve client challenges.
Since its inception in the spring of 2025, Ecology Group has grown quickly and strategically, with a focus on connecting some of the most respected ecological and environmental consultancies to build a new and distinct leader in a crowded, and competitive sector.
So far, the Group has welcomed MKA Ecology, Burton Reid Associates, Earth Active, Living Earth, Johns Associates, Wildwood Ecology, Mine Environment Management, Nicholas Pearson Associates, E3P, Urban Edge Environmental Consulting, and Focus Environmental Consultants. With the addition of Dynamic Rivers, the Group’s total headcount is over 350 people and its revenue over £25 million.
There is also huge value for each business that joins the Group. This comes in the shape of strategic business support, opportunity for organic growth through collaborative work winning and delivery, and greater access to regions, sectors, and clients.
The Group is also focused on creating a workplace culture that will not only establish them as an employer of choice but enable them to retain and invest in their already exceptional team. With their unique acquisitive model, the Group works with each business to enhance their operations, expand their service capabilities, and extend their positive impact.
Dynamic Rivers Managing Director, Dr. George Heritage, and Director Seb Bentley said:
“Our team of six people has achieved a great deal over the years, and it’s because of this that we’re part of Ecology Group. We bring our skills in river and floodplain restoration, geomorphology, hydromorphology, hydrology, and hydraulics – something entirely new for the Group. We’re still the same Dynamic Rivers our clients trust and our people love working at, but we now have greater access to new services, sectors, and clients, and greater investment in the learning, development, and training of our team.”
Chris Heyes, Chief Financial Officer of Ecology Group, said:
“Dynamic Rivers brings something new to the Group, with its specialist knowledge and focus on river and floodplain restoration. This of course builds on our existing service offering, but it also means we can deliver even greater value for our clients and nature alike. I’m excited to work with George, Seb, and the wider team, and I’m looking forward to delivering on our ambitious growth plans with them.”
Ecology Group is only in its second year of operation and has already seen impressive growth. The business is gearing up to welcome even more well-respected consultancies to strengthen its position as a leading specialist environmental firm and has significant plans from now and throughout next year.
