Portfolio News: Corvero acquires Datum Design

Ansor LLP, the London-based entrepreneurial private equity investment manager specialising in a “buy-and-build” strategy, announced that its portfolio company Corvero, the specialist consolidator of UK precision manufacturing for the Aerospace & Defence (A&D) industry, has acquired Datum Design, a Northern Ireland-based specialist in aerospace tooling design and manufacture. Datum is Corvero’s third acquisition this year.

Datum joins Corvero’s two existing businesses, both acquired earlier this year: C&F Millier, a Bristol-based manufacturer of high-precision components, and BIE Magnum, a Bristol-based specialist in surface treatments and finishes. The deal adds a third distinct capability to the group and establishes Corvero in Northern Ireland, one of the world’s leading aerospace clusters.

Corvero brings together complementary specialist businesses to provide a unified, strategic partner for global OEM and Tier 1 customers, integrating the value chain from design and planning to production and delivery.

Peter Marson, Managing Partner at Ansor Group, said: “UK precision manufacturing for aerospace and defence is a fragmented, growing sector, and Corvero is building an end-to-end contract manufacturing offering that better serves customers in this space. Datum has real engineering depth and relationships with the world’s leading aerospace manufacturers that go back decades. Each of Corvero’s three acquisitions this year has added a distinct capability, and Datum extends the group into tooling design. We’re pleased to welcome the Datum team, and we continue to back Corvero as it builds across the UK aerospace and defence supply chain.”

Founded 30 years ago by Michael Maguire and John Getty, Datum designs, builds and tests bespoke aerospace tooling, including jigs, fixtures, moulds and handling systems, in both metal and composite, and supports customers with design-only, build-to-print and design-and-build services. Its composite tooling expertise covers everything from simple fairings to complex primary structures, and extends to advanced moulding technologies such as Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), Resin Transfer Infusion (RTI) and SQRTM.

Datum is a trusted partner to Airbus, Boeing, GKN and Thales, with many customer relationships stretching back more than 30 years. Its work includes the Airbus A350 composite tooling programme and contributions to the Airbus A220 (formerly C-Series)  programme.

Datum’s next stage of growth is supported by a new Large Tooling Capability (LATCAP3), including a 22-metre, 5-axis machine co-funded by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), now the largest aerospace tooling machine in the UK. Located close to Datum’s core customers around Belfast, where moving large tools is a real constraint, LATCAP3 gives the UK sovereign large-tool capacity.

Datum introduces Corvero earlier into the contract manufacturing process, benefiting from Datum’s deep customer relationships at the design stage, and supporting Corvero’s aim of end-to-end integration of the value chain for global OEM and Tier 1 customers.

The acquisition gives Corvero a strong base in Northern Ireland, one of the world’s leading aerospace regions and home to the majority of the UK’s SC21 Gold awards.

Tom Senior, Corporate Development Director at Corvero, commented: “Datum changes where we can add value for customers. Its relationships with customers’ design teams mean we can now support them from the very earliest stage of their programmes, when tooling is being designed, and carry that through to precision-machined and finished components. Add LATCAP3, the largest aerospace tooling machine in the UK, and a real presence in Northern Ireland, and we are in a much stronger position to help customers deliver. Michael and John have built a business with genuine engineering depth, and we’re delighted to welcome the whole Datum team to the group”

Michael Maguire, Managing Director at Datum, said: “Datum has always been built around its people, and our engineers’ experience and understanding of aerospace tooling is what our customers rely on. When we thought about the future of the business, we wanted a partner that values that engineering depth and would build on it rather than change it, and Corvero does. Being part of a group that can take customers from tool design through to precision-machined and finished components means we can support them across more of their programmes, and gives us the backing to invest in our team and technology, while keeping the flexible, collaborative way of working our customers value. After 30 years, it’s an exciting next step for Datum.”

With three acquisitions now completed this year, Corvero continues to bring together complementary specialist capabilities across key UK aerospace regions – giving global A&D customers a single, trusted partner from tool design through to precision-machined and finished components.
